Cuyabeno Nature Reserve

Cuyabeno has an area of 5949,5 km², which is home to 1,400 different plant species, including 473 tree species alone. At an altitude of 200-350 meters above sea level, the park is part of the Tropical Wet Forest Zone. And the lagoon systems in the Cuyabeno Reserve are unique in the Ecuadorian Amazon lowlands.

Almost all Amazonian animal species are found in this nature reserve, birds are the jewels of the tropical jungle and with a list of about 580 bird species, e.g. hoatzin, New World parrots, tropical kingfishers, herons, Cuyabeno is on its way to becoming one of the best places in the world for bird watching.

A particular highlight is the Amazon dolphin, which is common throughout the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Especially in the Cuyabeno Reserve in the Aguarico system, these animals can be encountered regularly.

Yasuni National Park

Even more significant is the Yasuni National Park, located south of the Rio Napo, a global biodiversity hotspot with an area of approximately 10,227.37 km2. Some indigenous groups still live in this area, such as the Tagaeri and Taromenane groups and the Huaorani.

The national park is one of the most species-rich habitats on earth and is home to many endangered animal and plant species. Large parts of the park are still in an uninfluenced wilderness state with a diversity of high vertebrate species.

Although the Yasuni represents only 0.15% of the total area of the Amazon, one third of all Amazonian reptile, bird and mammal species are found here – 593 bird species alone – as well as more than a quarter of all Amazonian amphibian species (492 amphibian species). Furthermore, up to 70,000 insect species can be found on one hectare.

25,000 plant species (10 percent of all species in the world), including 2,274 tree and shrub species – 644 species per hectare, which is the highest density in the world.

Tena Area

Tena, the gateway to the Amazon, lies to the eastern foothills of the Andes in the upper rainforest of Ecuador. You can reach the jungle easily to start your unique journey into nature and to have a first glimpse of the flora and fauna.

On the 3 or 4 days tour, first and foremost are the boat trips in the dugout canoe across the river to the indigenous peoples of the Kichwa or Shuar communities.
